Billy Gene Smith, age 79, of Walterboro, South Carolina was called home by the Lord on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, while in the hospital following a fall at his home in mid-October.
Gene was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on November 6, 1944. He was the son of Charles R. Smith and Edna V. Way Smith of Johns Island. His family later moved to Grays, SC, where he graduated from Grays High School in 1963. He was a retired Operator from the Solvay chemical plant in Charleston, SC. During his time of employment there, it was known as Mobil Chemical, then as Albright and Wilson. He was a devout Christian and was a member of Coosawhatchie Baptist Church in Ridgeland, SC. He loved to fish and hunt when he could. Picnics were one of his favorite things, along with trips to the mountains. He enjoyed watching sports and followed his football games until the very end. He enjoyed spending time with family, and he adored all of his grandchildren. He was a devoted husband and was married to his wife, Mary Ann, for 51 years and remained completely loyal to her after her death, through the day he died. His saying was "Forever and Always," and he meant and lived out every word.
Gene was preceded in death by his brother Hasty Smith, his grandson David M. Smith, and by the love of his life, his wife Mary Ann Williams Smith. He is survived by his sons, Miles C. Moxley (Elizabeth) of Goose Creek, SC, and Patrick W. Smith (Dana) of South Mills, NC, and daughters Felicia M. Thomason (Brian) of Anderson, SC, and Grace V. Lacheney (Nathan) of Summerville, SC, as well as brothers Raymod "Ray" Smith and Michael Smith, and sisters Wanda Barton and Brenda Barton (David). Through blended families, Gene is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends beginning at 12:30 pm until the hour of the services at 1:30pm on Monday, November 13, 2023, at Gillisonville Baptist Church with burial following the service in the church cemetery.
