Carolyn Jean (Ziefel) Deakin

Carolyn J. Deakin, 93, of Bluffton, S.C. passed away peacefully on December 30, 2021.

Carolyn was born on July 31, 1928, to Charles and Carrie Ziefel in Pittsburgh, PA.  As a graduate of South Hills High School, Carolyn worked at Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh.  She married Thomas Deakin in 1948 and had 3 daughters, Pamela, Deborah and Carole.  Carolyn continued her career at Dixmont and Mayview Hospitals in the purchasing and accounting departments.  Carolyn and Tom moved to Bluffton, S.C. in 1998 after her retirement.

Carolyn had a variety of interests from singing in church and community choirs to sewing, painting, and quilting, with which she created beautiful works of art for her friends and family.  She volunteered through her church and as a sister of PEO International, assisted in vital philanthropic work for her community and women at large.

Carolyn, known as “Sara” by her family and friends, was passionate about her family and all were a constant source of pride and joy.

She was preceded in death by Thomas D. Deakin, her loving husband of 60 years, and is survived by her three daughters: Pamela (Robert) Schloer, Deborah Deakin, and Carole (Rodney) Owen, as well as her sisters Lois (Ziefel) Lanz and Sharon (Ziefel) Green.  She is also survived by five grandchildren: Thomas Schloer, Lindsey (Schloer) Rudolchick, Whitney (Jennings) Colley, Jason Jennings, and Kelsey Nickel, as well as four great-grandchildren: Reagan Schloer, Jackson Schloer, Caroline Colley, and Gordon Colley.

A Celebration of Life will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 3001 Meeting Street, Hilton Head Island, SC  29926 at 11am on March 26, 2022.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that the donations be made in the name of Carolyn Deakin to the Agape Hospice Care 110 Dillon Dr., Spartanburg, SC 29307 or All Saints Episcopal Church, 3001 Meeting Street, Hilton Head Island, SC  29926.
