Catherine J. (Kitty) Smagala, 91, died peacefully after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease at Bloom of Belfair in Bluffton, SC. She was born on April 3, 1928 at Beverly Hospital in Beverly, Massachusetts, the daughter of Antonio Zanuccoli and Maria Ceccarelli. Kitty attended Beverly High School. At the close of WW II, she married John Henry Smagala of Salem, Massachusetts, a veteran of the United States Navy. She was employed for many years by Varian Associates of Beverly, Massachusetts. She was predeceased by her siblings Alba Fabri, Inez Casale, Carlo and Armando Zanuccoli. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Robert K. and Cheryl Smagala of Milford, N.J., her granddaughter, Maren Smagala of Three Bridges, N.J., her daughter and son-in-law Catherine and Dennis Smith of Bluffton, S.C., her grandson Robert J. Steach of Manchester, Massachusetts and her great granddaughter and great grandson Mary D. Steach and Robert N. Steach of Manchester, Massachusetts as well as nieces and nephews. A private burial service will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Beverly at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Kitty’s memory may be made to Hospice of the Lowcountry, Bluffton, S.C.
