Charles (Chuck) Larew passed away peacefully on November 3, 2018 in Bluffton, SC at the age of 86.
Chuck was born February 28, 1932 in Iowa City, Iowa to the late Andrew Jackson (AJ) and Mildred Larew. Prior to joining the Airforce in 1954, he graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Business Administration. After attending USAF flight school at Lackland Air Force Base, Chuck was stationed in Spangdahlen, Germany where he served as a helicopter navigator and met his wife Helen. They were married August 18, 1956. Upon completion of his military service, he returned to the states with Helen and their infant daughter. He spent his career in the insurance industry with long-held positions at Mutual of NY and The Travelers.
Chuck was a family man who cherished the joy of doing anything with those he loved. His great sense of humor helped the family in ways we’ll always remember. After his retirement, he and Helen traveled extensively, taking various cruises around the globe and spending considerable time in Europe and China. Chuck was a man of faith who was devoted to the Presbyterian Church, recognized as an Elder, and served as a church lecturer.
Chuck is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen, and his children, Sandy (Jim), Bill, Bob (Kathy), and Jim (Debbie), grandchildren, Elyse, James, Tim, Nick, Ali, and great grandchildren, Lilyana, Emily Sterling, and Charley. He also leaves behind his siblings, Wilma, John (Corky), and Don.
In lieu of a formal service, the family is celebrating Chuck’s life with a private gathering. Donations to the American Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) in Chuck’s name would be greatly appreciated.
