Cree M. Windus, 83, of Bluffton, South Carolina, passed away peacefully in hospice at Coastal Carolina Hospital in Hardeeville, South Carolina on Saturday, May 15th, 2021.
Cree was born on June 21, 1937 in Manhattan, New York to the late Eric Sr. and Mary Windus. She attended college at SUNY-New Paltz, Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA, and Columbia University in New York City where she obtained a M.S. in Library Science in 1964. She travelled extensively during her life and lived in Greenfield, MA for over 18 years where she and her partner, Antha Smith owned the World Eye Bookshop. She served in the Army during 1964-1978 as a librarian working in Korea, Germany, and at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. She enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, reading, music, and artwork. Some of her trips included hiking part of the Appalachian Trail, whitewater rafting on the Colorado River, taking an Alaskan cruise, and working for the US Forest Service in Stanley, ID. Cree and Antha began coming to the Hilton Head Island area in 1987 when they purchased a time share. Cree worked at several jobs in the area including the Hilton Head Humane Association, CVS Pharmacy, and Pet Pals Pet Service. They eventually purchased a home in Sun City after they both retired about ten years ago.
Cree is survived by her longtime partner, Antha Smith; two nieces, Jennifer Windus of Fredericktown, Ohio and Heather Windus of Topsfield, MA; a sister-in-law (Janet); four grandnieces and grandnephews (Natasha, Rachael, Jared, and Derek); and one great-grandnephew (Bodhi). She was preceded in death by her brother, Eric M. Windus, Jr.
There will be no funeral and memorial donations may be made to the Hilton Head Humane Association.
