Daniel Kindel arrived at his last port of call while living at The Oaks in Beaufort, South Carolina on December 26, 2021. He laid his head to rest after a long illness. Dan was a loving brother and uncle, and most of all, a welcome face among Caribbean cruisers where he lived, sailed, and worked for most of his life. He was known to lend a hand to friends when needed – whether it was to help ferry a friend to another island or scrape the bottom of a boat.
Dan was born in Columbus, Ohio to parents Daniel and Dorothy Kindel. He spent his youth in Wyoming, Ohio and graduated from Wyoming High School (1977) and Tulane University (1982) and subsequently worked as a marine biologist for the oil and gas industry in the New Orleans area. Dan enjoyed work on the water. Eventually, the sea beckoned, and he embarked on a life voyage aboard the Calliope that took him to the Bahamas, Windward Islands, Central and South America. He was accompanied by two furry friends, first Carmelita and then Mattie, both avid swimmers and watchdogs. Packages containing discoveries and mementos from Dan’s travels were stored in his sister’s basement for many years, including a partially cleaned turtle shell, reminding everyone of his adventures.
Dan was forever an optimist, looking for a sunny day and a good wind. As illness became a part of his life and he lived ashore, we asked him how he was, how he liked his room. He smiled and said, “I’m on the Caribbean side. Beautiful view.”
Dan is preceded in death by his father and mother, Daniel and Dorothy (Dottie) Kindel and his brothers, David and Douglas. He is survived by his sister Dana (Kindel) Advocaat and brother-in-law, Gijsbert Diederik Advocaat and two nephews, Alexander and William Advocaat.
