David W. Knowlton, III passed peacefully on December 24, 2021 after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease.
He was born in N. Hollywood, CA on April 26, 1941 to the late David W. Knowlton, II and Helen (Wilcox) Knowlton, and was raised in Santa Barbara. David was a West Point graduate, an Army Engineer and was further educated at Stanford University. He retired from the Army in 1973 as a Lt. Colonel in the Reserves, and at that time began a two-year transition to a full-time art career. In 1976 his showroom and gallery opened in historic Winchester, VA. Offering acrylic originals and limited edition lithographic prints, all with a theme of peaceful tranquility. He leaves behind a legacy of more than six thousand paintings which will be enjoyed and appreciated by generations to come.
David will be remembered by his loving wife, Marilyn, his daughter Cynthia Garcia, his brother Daniel, his granddaughters Sophia and Heaven, his step-sons Richard Klein, David Klein and Daniel Klein, eight step-grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, and a niece and nephew.
David was one of the founding members of the Pluff Mud Gallery on Calhoun St. in Old Town Bluffton and enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow artists. Friends and family will remember him as a kind, caring man who loved his family and enjoyed working in his yard almost as much as he enjoyed painting.
Sauls Funeral Home of Bluffton is assisting the family with arrangements.
