Denis Bonnett Obituary

Denis Bonnett passed away on January 28, 2024, after a long battle with dementia.

He was born and raised in Topeka, Kansas and was a graduate of Washburn University. Denis left the midwest to pursue his passions and a career in New York, beginning his life-long dedication to serving others; workers and employers in leadership in employee benefits. This is where he met his wife, Gail, and his success in business led them to many places.

Denis was a loving father of three girls, all born in Cleveland, Ohio, and lived in Bay Village, Ohio.  He brought his family back to reside in Mendham, New Jersey, to lead employee benefits at Great West Life for 17 more years in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Upon retirement, Denis did not lose sight of his passions. He continued to explore both business and philanthropy. A part-time homeowner and resident of Hilton Head since 1987, Denis and Gail relocated to Port Royal Plantation in 1997. He followed his love of the outdoors, starting a landscaping business and also formed JCM Incorporated, an insurance agency specializing in Group Health and Pension Plans for members of affinity groups. He prided himself on being able to find reasonably priced insurance for businesses that might have an employee or two with chronic conditions… helping the hard to insure, get insured.

Living in the Low Country, Denis became active in all aspects of promoting and developing our beautiful Island - especially the arts community and improving education for our children.  He joined the Hilton Head Choral Society where he served as President for three years.   He also sang with the Hilton Head Orchestra Symphony Chorus, Mary Green Chorus and various Church Groups.  He enjoyed attending plays at the Arts Center and enjoying live music at the Jazz Corner.

Denis was active in the Chamber, the Greater Island Council and Hilton Head Rotary, where he served as Sergeant-at-Arms, Director of Club Services, Rotary Foundation Director, Club Secretary, Vice-President, President Elect, and President (2011). During his time at Rotary, he was instrumental in bringing Safety Town, NOC, and Memory Matters to the community.  He served on the Board of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry.

Denis is survived by his wife, Gail of Bluffton, SC, his sister Deanna Schlegel of Bentonville, AR, his three daughters Jennifer Bonnett of Hilton Head Island, SC, Nicole Jozic Wynne               (Randy) of Bluffton, SC and Michele Bonnett of Chicago, IL; and 2 grandchildren: Madigail & Jackston Jozic of Bluffton, SC, sister-in-law Brenda Rees (Floyd) and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A visitation is planned on February 12, 2024 from 2-4pm at Sauls Funeral Home of Bluffton, SC.  In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and Hilton Head Choral Society in his name.
