Donald H. Mikkelson, AKA “ Butch”, “Tootsie”, and “Schmoo”, originally from Devils Lake, North Dakota, passed away at home in Moss Creek, Hilton Head Island, S.C., on March 4, 2021, age 78. He was born April 27, 1942, to Donald and Marie (Schumacher) Mikkelson. He was graduated from Devils Lake High School and University of North Dakota. Don was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and ROTC at UND.
After graduation he was commissioned First Lieutenant and joined the Army Armored Cavalry. After military service he began his civilian career in insurance with Aetna Insurance in Aurora, Ill. as a marketing man. Aetna transferred Don (and Linda) to Oakland, CA. as Marketing Manager, then to the Sacramento office. He left Aetna to open the Northbrook Insurance office in San Francisco as General Manager. Later he was promoted to Vice President and moved to the Chicago area to Northbrook’s home office. Don finished his career as an Officer and a Vice President of Commercial Insurance and Independent Agents for Allstate Insurance in Northbrook, Ill.
Don retired, with Linda, in January, 2000 to Moss Creek in Hilton Head Island, SC., to golf and enjoy the wonderful area. He served as Tournament Chair of Hilton Head Senior Men’s Golf Association and was involved in several different committees in Moss Creek Association, including Long Range Planning and MCGA Men’s Chair.
Don and Linda (McElreath) married in 1969 in Augusta, GA, in Georgia’s first Ecumenical wedding. He is survived by his wife of 51 Years; sons, Eric (Liza) Mikkelson and Nicholas Mikkelson; brothers Tom (Jeanne) Mikkelson and Ron “Bub” Mikkelson, and many nieces and nephews. He was called “Grumpy” by Grandchildren Jacob Mikkelson and Evan Mikkelson.
