Dr. Allan Bennett Obituary

Dr. Allan Thompson Bennett, 56, joined his loved ones in heaven on April 11, 2023. Allan was born on August 16, 1966 in Columbia, South Carolina to Norma Thompson Bennett and Dr. William Paul Bennett Sr.

Allan was a third generation physician, following in the footsteps of his grandfather Dr. James Allan Bennett and his father, Dr. William Paul Bennett Sr.  Dr. James Allan practiced medicine in West Virginia where he traveled on horseback to see patients and compounded medicine for patient treatment. Dr. William Paul practiced in Columbia and was one of the first physicians in South Carolina to perform laparoscopic surgery.

Allan received his undergraduate degree from Furman University in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science and then the University of South Carolina studying Biology. He graduated with a Master’s degree in microbiology from Clemson University. He then attended the Medical University of South Carolina graduating in 1995 and becoming an honorary member of the Alpha Mega Alpha Medical Society.

Allan completed a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology serving as chief resident in clinical pathology July 1, 1999 - June 30, 2000 at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Dr. Bennett most notably completed two fellowships and was double board certified. His first fellowship was in Forensics at Emory University followed by a surgical pathology fellowship from the Medical University of South Carolina.

Dr. Bennett was a partner at Professional Pathology Services in Columbia, South Carolina and joined the medical staff at Hilton Head Hospital as a Pathologist and Medical Director of the Laboratory on November 2007 acting in this capacity for 16 years.

Allan met his wife, June Bennett R.N., B.S.N., at Hilton Head Hospital where he became invaluable in surgical breast pathology for the Breast Health Center.

Beloved by many, he served as a member of numerous hospital and medical staff committees, including the Blood Utilization Committee, Infection Control Committee, Performance Improvement Committee, Medical Staff Peer Review Committee, Breast Tumor Board, the Physician Leadership Group, and the Medical Executive Committee. Dr. Bennett was appointed Vice Chief of the Medical Staff, becoming Chief of the Medical Staff (2020-2021). During his tenure as Chief of Staff he served as ex-officio member of the Hilton Head Hospital Governing Board.

Allan loved his family, wife June Bennett (Kasiak-Gambla) and daughters Julia Rose Wilson (Jared) and Mary Katherine Gambla (Adam). The apple of his eye was his little grandson, Everett Michael Wilson. He was a proud and loving Papa.

He is also survived by his sister, Catherine Rhea of Columbia and his loving niece Kelsey Rhea. He is preceded in death by his mother Norma Bennett, father Dr. William Paul Bennett Sr., and brother William Paul Bennett Jr.

Allan loved nature and was an avid outdoorsman favoring hunting deer and fishing. He enjoyed the peaceful woods and loved turkey calling. Allan was a former member of Mount Repose hunt club and various other hunt clubs. He and June are members of the Palmetto Bluff Shooting Club.

Allan was an enthusiastic Clemson fan and enjoyed watching them win the 2016 National Championship.

Dr. Bennett was a quintessential southern gentleman and will be most remembered for his genuine kindness and loving spirit.
