Eliza Mears Horton - West Columbia, SC – Mrs. Eliza Mears Horton, 87, died on April 26, 2021. Born in Ridgeland, SC, on May 13, 1933 to the late John Harry and Mary Rebecca Nettles Mears. She was a devoted wife to the late Willard Charlton Horton, Jr., and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend to many. Her Christian faith was the foundation of her life and she was a longtime member of Lexington and Northside Baptist churches consecutively. She believed that God has a plan and a purpose for each person and her goal was to faithfully follow His plan. Looking back on her life, she was proudest of graduating from high school with honors, 49 wonderful years of marriage, the love of her siblings, and endearing respect from family, friends and neighbors. She enjoyed quilting, baking, canning, and even published a cookbook of peach recipes.
She is survived by her two sons, Kirk (Julie) Horton of Manassas, VA and Parke (Dawn Hipp) Horton of Chapin, SC and one daughter, Tracy Spires of Lexington, SC; eight grandchildren Chad, Kyle (Meghan), Sarah (Thomas) Hansen, Janelle (Jeffery) Quattlebaum, Carter, Brooke, Amanda (Barrett) Isbell, and Rebecca Spires; great grandchildren Jendayiah and Junior Quattlebaum, Peter and Nathan Hansen, and Kaiden Isbell; and sisters Edith Nettles and Gladys (Dick) DeLoach.
She was predeceased by twelve siblings, Raymond Mears, William Mears, Harold Mears, Homer Mears, LeRoy Mears, Benny Mears, Bobby Mears, Mary Alice Hudson, Gertrude Smith, Nettie Fitch, Dolly Ramsey, and Shirley Murdaugh.
Burial will be at the Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, SC. A graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chaplain’s Discretionary Fund at Still Hopes, 1 Still Hopes Drive, West Columbia, SC, 29169. Sauls Funeral Home, 310 W. Adams Avenue, Ridgeland, SC is in charge of arrangements.
