Everett Thomas Abernethy, age 82, passed away July 10, 2021 in Bluffton, SC after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
He was the son of Ina and Everett M. Abernethy of Lenoir, NC (Deceased). Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Anne Thomas Abernethy of Bluffton; two sons, E. Thomas Abernethy, Jr. (Kim) and J. Todd Abernethy (Pattie); a daughter, Kelly Hodges (Barry); five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; sisters, Linda Fisher (John) and Jo Ann Lea; one brother, David L. Abernethy, MD (Elizabeth); sister-in-law, Judith T. Hamilton; brother-in-law, John A. Thomas, Jr.; and many nieces and nephews.
Tom graduated from Lenoir High School where he was a member of the nationally known Lenoir High School Band. He was a member of The Civil Air Patrol, a foreign exchange student to Germany (AFS). He served as a long-time, active member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church. He received his Eagle Scout Award, along with the PRO DED ET PATRIA Award, given for outstanding service to God and Country.
Tom was a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, NC with a BA in history and a minor in business. He was a TKE Fraternity member. He was a business executive in The Hardwood Lumber Industry for many years and an entrepreneur who started numerous businesses. His interests were many and varied. They included world travel, antique collecting (luxury motor cars and furniture), flying radio control airplanes, and boating, both motorboats and sailing.
Tom loved his family and provided them with unique opportunities. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
