George Bekampis Obituary

Beloved George John Bekampis, 86 passed away unexpectedly at his home in Bluffton, SC on Sunday, June 12, 2022.  He was born in Wilkes Barre, PA to the late Anna and Charles Bekampis on July 24, 1935.

George graduated from GAR High School, Wilkes Barre, in 1953.  He attended Kings College in Wilkes Barre for two years then completed his BS degree at The University of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN in Electrical Engineering in 1957.  His time there shaped his passion for high standards and for the Fighting Irish.   Early in his career at Philco in Philadelphia he was a pioneer in the design of early computing.  Later he spent many successful years with Honeywell and Bull Information Systems in Massachusetts.  Known as a problem solver and inventor, George was responsible for two important data processing design patents.

After living in Sudbury and Northborough, MA for 40 years he and Lucille retired to Sun City, in Bluffton, Hilton Head SC.  While there he was active in the University of Notre Dame Alumni Club of Hilton Head including several years as President. He was very active promoting the Annual Golf Tournament which raised funds for three local Catholic Schools’ scholarships.  For many years he chaired the committee to select a local school teacher to attend a three-day seminar at the University of Notre Dame.

George loved the camaraderie of sports including golf, recording a “hole in one” at Okatie Creek in 2015 and playing tennis with his local group known as the “Geezers”.  He always enjoyed nature, and developed a love for fly fishing later in life even tying his own flies.

He is survived by his wife Lucille of 59 years, three children and seven grandchildren.  Daughter, Carol Ann and her husband Paul McGowan, Southborough  MA, daughter Rebecca  Murray and her husband Micheal, North Hampton NH, son Kenneth Charles Bekampis and his wife Lara, Mansfield MA, grandchildren Alisa and Kelsey McGowan,  Michael, Kaylee and Jaimie Murray, Jack and Joseph Bekampis.  He was predeceased by his parents Anna and Charles Bekampis, sister Dorothy, Middletown CT, and brother Francis Bekampis, Wilkes-Barre, PA.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 31 St. Gregory Drive, Bluffton, SC on Friday June 17th at 10:30 am.

A burial service will take place in Sudbury, MA at a later date to be determined.
