Gladys Mixson Obituary

Gladys Elizabeth Peeples Mixson, 96 of Ridgeland, SC, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, September 11th. Her final days were spent surrounded by her family who lovingly called her Monna.

Mrs. Mixson was the eldest child of Joseph Robert and Peen Louise Peeples and the wife of the late James Routh Mixson. She was born in 1924 in Hampton County, SC and lived the majority of her life in and around Ridgeland, SC. She grew up in Jacksonville, FL and at the time of her passing had lived in Ridgeland for approximately 63 years where she was a member of Ridgeland Baptist Church.

Mrs. Mixson served as a nurse’s aid in Ridgeland hospitals for 22 years, spent many years as a private nurse, and also assisted her late daughter-in-law in her florist business.  She was known for her keen recollection of family history, her love of coffee, and several wonderful dishes she lovingly prepared for numerous family gatherings.  Mrs. Mixson was known affectionately as Monna and was as unique as the name implies.  She encouraged her family to ‘Live it up’, hold steady to their faith, and love one another.

In addition to her parents and her husband she is preceded in death by her brothers Jessie Everette Peeples, and Douglas MacArthur Peeples; her sister Barbara Louise (Bobbie) Peeples Tuten; her son James Routh (Jimmy) Mixson, Jr. and his wife Judy Mixson; her sons-in-law James Edward Clements and John Howard (Johnny) Taylor; and her grandson Jerry Balkcom.

Mrs. Mixson is survived by her children, Kathryn Elizabeth Clements of Hilton Head Island, SC; Marcia Louise Martinez (Al) of Vista, CA; Rosemary Taylor of Ridgeland;  Michael Allen Mixson of Ridgeland; and Robert Edward Mixson (Judie) of Statesboro, GA.  In addition she is survived by her brother Joseph Robert Peeples, Jr. (Joyce) of Jacksonville, FL; 12 Grandchildren, 10 Great- Grandchildren, 2 Great-Great-Grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, September 13th at Sauls Funeral Home in Ridgeland from 6 to 8pm with a funeral on Monday, September 14th at 2pm at Coosawhatchie Baptist Church.  Mrs. Mixson will be buried alongside her late husband at Sand Hill Cemetery.
