Henry Winnenberg Obituary

Henry John Winnenberg of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2022, at the age of 83. After several months of declining health, John died peacefully with his beloved wife Judy by his side.

John was born in Portsmouth, Ohio on November 2, 1939, to father Henry James Winnenberg and mother Mary Fidelia Calhoon Winnenberg. John was a high school athlete where he played both basketball and baseball. After graduation, he attended the University of Dayton where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. It was there on a St. Patrick’s Day blind date, he met the love of his life, Judith Carolyn Englert. They married in January 1962 and began a 60-year marriage together. They raised 3 children, Kathy, John and Carolyn.

John enlisted and served in active duty in the Navy from 1963 to 1965 during the Vietnam War. As the ship’s secretary on the USS Mars, we often joked that his battle station was the “home keys”. After an honorable discharge, he returned to his wife and daughter and his career.

John retired after a successful 30-year career in pharmaceutical sales and sales management with Ross Laboratories, a division of Abbott Laboratories. During his career selling Similac, infant formula, and other cough/cold products, he was promoted multiple times and moved to many different locations providing well for his family.

At age 55, John and Judy were able to retire to North Carolina, Virginia and South Carolina where they enjoyed many wonderful years travelling, golfing, socializing with friends and enjoying time with their growing family. John enjoyed boating, fishing and golfing. He was an avid single digit handicapped player who had multiple holes in one (as shown in his picture). John had a terrific singing voice and he played the guitar and sang most every night after dinner. He always enjoyed having the entire family together for holidays and family parties.

John was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Judith Carolyn Winnenberg; his brother, George Anthony “Pete” Winnenberg (Peggy); his children Kathryn Lynn Sutter (Kevin), John David Winnenberg (Aimee), Carolyn Elizabeth Congelosi (Carl); his grandchildren John Jorgen Sutter (Amy), Henry Scott Sutter, Harry Jacob Winnenberg, Claire Alexandra Congelosi, Kaitlin Nichole Winnenberg; and his great-grandchildren George Henry Sutter and Remington Jane Sutter.

A funeral ceremony for John is planned for January 13, 2023, at 11am at the Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundary St, Beaufort, SC 29902. All are invited to attend.
