Herbert “Spike” C. Kammerer, Jr., 87, of Bluffton, SC passed away on December 27, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Herbert was born on December 21, 1934, to Herbert and Margaret Kammerer in South Orange, NJ. After graduating from Columbia High School, he attended Lehigh University and graduated in 1956 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He retired in 1991 after 35 years of employment with IBM.
In addition to being an active member of Church of the Palms UMC, he belonged to IBM Quarter Century Club, Low Country Civil War Roundtable and Sun City Strategic Planning Committee.
His volunteer activities included USO, Caring Neighbors, Bluffton Self-Help, and the building committee of his church.
His interests were playing golf and taking OLLI classes. He was an avid sports enthusiast and an ardent fan of the NY Giants.
He was passionate about his family and their activities. They were a constant source of pride and joy.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jacqueline, of 61 years, and a proud father of 5 daughters: Kathleen (Dennis) McKinley, Colleen Drummond, Margaret (John) Clarke, Mary Beth (Ross) Sabath, Jennifer (Russell) Hoch. He is also survived by a sister, Ann (Kammerer) Deitrich and a niece and nephew. His legacy lives on through his 15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; Casey McKinley, Jaclyn McKinley, Keely (Deon) Davis, Conor (Ashton) Drummond, Michael Drummond, Ryan (Emily) Clarke, Kerry Clarke, Erin Clarke, Emma Clarke, Jeffrey Sabath, Gavin Sabath, Daniel Sabath, Caroline Hoch, Maureen Hoch, Maegan Hoch; and great grandchildren, Nora Davis and Charlotte Clarke.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Church of the Palms, 1425 Okatie Highway, Okatie, SC at 11am on January 21, 2022. A private interment will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Wounded Warrior Project in his name.
