Herbert Martin Obituary

Herbert Franklin Martin

March 10, 1929 – November 5, 2023

Herbert Franklin Martin, 94, of Bluffton, SC died at home on Sunday, November 5, 2023 from complications of Parkinson’s Disease which he battled for seventeen years.  He was born on March 10, 1929 in Woodsboro, Maryland, the oldest son of the late Luther and Hilda (Hoffman) Martin.  He was happily married to Phyllis Mae Wastler Martin for 72 years.

Herb was a member of St. Andrew by the Sea Methodist Church, Hilton Head, SC where he served as an usher and worked on the finance committee team for many years.  He and Phyllis helped host the church coffee hour and assisted with the annual church Fall Bazaar.

Herb worked at Snook Brothers in Lewistown, Maryland before joining the Air Force in 1949 and served his country until 1952.  While on leave at home, he met and married the love of his life, Phyllis, after a whirlwind, two-week courtship.

Herb worked for Moore Business Forms for thirty-seven years beginning in 1954 in Thurmont, Maryland as a press helper and retired in 1991 as Director of Manufacturing, Glenview, Illinois.  He often remarked that he loved his job and enjoyed going to work every day of his life.

Herb enjoyed golf and said when he retired he looked forward to playing as much golf as he could.  And, he did, until Parkinson’s forced him to stop.

Herb was an expert craftsman in many remodeling projects that he undertook.

Besides his wife, he is survived by daughter Melanie E. Davis, Bluffton, SC; son Jeffery H. Martin, Hilton Head, SC; daughter Dawn M. Troxell, wife of Dr. Gary L. Troxell, Ephrata, PA.  Grandchildren Jessica Marie Rudmin (Hans), Pittsburgh, PA; Ryan Martin Davis, Bluffton, SC; Amy Dawn VanNewkirk (Rick), Pittsburgh, PA; Jeffery Michael Davis, San Jose, CA.  Great grandchildren Jack Herbert Rudmin and Wendell Joseph Rudmin, Pittsburgh, PA.

He is survived by brothers Kenneth Martin (Phyllis, deceased), Taneyton, MD and Odale Martin (Connie, deceased), Lewistown, MD; and members of the Wastler family.

He was preceded in death by sister Dorothy Martin Lantz (Donald, deceased); brothers Elwood Martin (Sherry, deceased) and infant brother Bernard.

Services will be held at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Road, Bluffton, SC 29910 on Monday, November 20, 2023 at noon and on Friday, December 8, 2023 at Lewistown United Methodist Church, 11:30 AM.  Inurnment following at Blue  Ridge Cemetery, Altamont Avenue, Thurmont, MD.
