Jerry Herbert Monk, 81 of Bluffton, South Carolina went to be with the Lord Friday, April 22, 2022, at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Florida.

He was born in Albia, Iowa to Harold Edgar Monk and Edythe Luciendia Locke on October 16, 1940. He graduated from Lovilia High School and attended N.E. State Teachers College in Kirksville, Missouri in 1959. With patriotism and pride Jerry enlisted in the United States Navy on August 27, 1959, in Des Moines, Iowa. During his 28 years of honorable service to our country he received the following awards and decorations: Naval Aircrewman, 5-Meritorious Service Medals, 2-Armed Forces Reserve Medals, Overseas Service Ribbon, and Expert Pistol Medal. In his last 21 years as a Naval Reservist, he flew over 3500 hours as a C118 Flight Attendant, C118 Flight Communicator, and DC-9/C9B Load Master before he retired on January 1, 1994, as a Senior Chief Aviation Electronics Technician US Naval Reserve.

Jerry worked on aircraft electronic systems while serving active duty and then went to work for Fairbanks-Morse Scale Co. before transferring to Atlanta. He worked for Lockheed-Georgia Co. building aircraft before joining Southern Airlines. He was a licensed electrician and CPR trainer. After a series of mergers he dedicated 32 years’ service to Northwest Airlines and retired in 2005. During his time at Northwest Airlines, he devoted several years vigorously working for the rights of fellow employees as the union representative.

On April 2, 1983, he was received into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church. He joined the Knights of Columbus on November 5, 2000 and continued with earning his fourth degree. He has served in several capacities such as Financial Secretary, Treasurer, Warden, Outside Guard, and as Director of many committees. He also served as an active member and Officer for many years. He was a faithful attendee at all their meetings and greeted the membership with care and devotion.

Jerry moved to Bluffton, South Carolina in 2012. His greatest joy was spending time with family and watching his grandkids in all their activities. His favorite pastime was traveling, especially cruising, where he spent countless hours bidding on art. He always looked forward to a well-prepared meal and his next Icehouse beer.
