After her children and extended family had time to surround her with their love and tears, Joanne Scott Phillips, 87, wife of Captain E.T. "Phil" Phillips, USMC, Ret., went home to be with her Lord Jesus on Aug. 30, 2022.
Joanne was born in Nashville, TN on Feb. 21, 1935, to Wallace Cooper Scott, Jr. and Mabel Webb Scott, the third of five children. She was loved by all who knew her for her joi de vivre, her faith, and her compassion for others. She birthed four children, but she was also beloved mother to her husband's four children, to daughters and sons-in-law. As "Mama Jo," she shone extra brightly to all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always remembered their birthdays and congratulated them on special achievements. And boy, could she serve some spectacular family meals at holiday time!
Joanne's sense of style, in both her perfectly appointed home and in her fashion statements, could have served as the definition of inimitable. Never too much, her unique flair meant she was always tastefully coordinated. A world traveler, she and Phil saw the sights on every continent except Antarctica.
After a decade long career at Merrill Lynch in Augusta, GA, she launched a second as a probate paralegal for several notable Hilton Head law firms, beginning with Dowling, Dowling, Sanders, and Dukes in 1973, until she retired from Bethea, Jordan, and Griffin in 2000.
She also volunteered her talents to helping First Baptist Church of Hilton Head get the solid footing it needed to thrive as a harbor for both residents and tourists over the past five decades. Her beautiful singing voice made a joyful impact on the choir.
She is survived by her husband Phil; son Roxy (Viki) Gwynn; daughters Carol Adkins, Joanna (David) Brice, and Anne Marie (Andy) Hudick; stepson Wayne (Beverly) Phillips; 17 grandchildren; and 23 great-grands. She was predeceased by her parents, step-daughters Debbie Phillips and Barbara Miller, stepson Vernon Keith Phillips, and a beloved grandson, Rob Gwynn.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 am followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am, Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at First Baptist Church of Hilton Head Island. Burial will be at 2:00 pm at Beaufort National Cemetery. Pastor Brett Myers of First Baptist Church will be officiating the services.
