John Breckenridge Holt, formerly of Pickerington, Ohio, died peacefully at his home in Bluffton, South Carolina, on March 7, 2023. John (“Breck”) was born in Pittsburgh, PA, to H. Whiting Holt and Jane Orr Holt on July 8, 1940. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, William Holt. He is survived by his wife Shirley Moorman Holt, their children Kevin Whiting Holt of Bluffton, SC and Dr. Mary Beth Holt of Columbus, OH as well as his twin brother Dr. Michael F. Holt (Joyce) of Charlottesville, VA. John was a graduate of Shady Side Academy of Pittsburgh and Lehigh University and served in the U.S. Army.
John had a big laugh and ear-to-ear smile. He loved starting each day with his morning coffee and crossword puzzle. He was an avid sports fan who especially enjoyed watching the Steelers. He enjoyed riding his bike, sharing a joke, and talking about politics and current events. He was most happy when he was boating on the waters around his home in the low country of South Carolina. Above all else, John loved his family – his wife and children, his parents and brothers, his extended family, and in-laws.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held in Pickerington, Ohio on March 26, 2023. Please reach out to the family for additional information.
John was a lifelong animal lover. Through the years he had six dogs, four grand-dogs, and one grand-ish cat. To honor the joy that animals brought into his life, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of the Shelter, a non-profit organization established to fund the medical care of sick or injured dogs at the Franklin County Dog Shelter and Adoption Center. https://www.friendsoftheshelter.org/donate
