John E. Newhall Sr., 90, of Bluffton SC passed Tuesday morning, September 15th at NHC Heathcare Center in Bluffton, SC.
He was born January 25, 1930 to the late Harrison and Hazel Newhall in McConnellsville, NY and married his one true love, Joan B Baker on October 4, 1947 and they were rarely apart for the next 72 years.
A lifetime resident of Jamestown, NY, Mr. Newhall worked as a springsetter at Jamestown Royal Furniture until becoming a member of the Jamestown Fire Department where he served until retiring at 1985. He was a founding member of the Fire Department’s Morton Club. He also did painting and papering on the side for many local residents earning a reputation for doing excellent work.
Over the years Mr. Newhall enjoyed camping, traveling, playing tennis, line dancing and nature walks in Florida. He especially enjoyed family camping in Niagara Falls and car trips across country. The couple made many trips to attend the Grand Ole Op’ry in Nashville. While line dancing he and his wife appeared on Club Dance on the Nashville Network TV cable station. Mr. and Mrs. Newhall spent winters over the last 20 years at his Florida home, spending hours at the various beaches nearby.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Harrison Newhall Jr. , Leslie Vincent, Harold Vincent, and Robert Vincent; three sisters Anita Cooney, Lois Newhall and Velma Bucknam, a grandson Richard Baker and great grandchild Eryka Phillips.
He is survived by loving family including wife Joan Newhall, two children, John E. Newhall Jr. (Jane) and Cheryl A Baker (Russell), both of Bluffton, SC; 4 grandchildren, Jennifer Simpson, Jeannine Boucher, John E Newhall III, and James Baker; 6 great-grandchildren, Stephen Baker, Lindsey Grimm, Samantha Warren, Scott Snow, Olivia Newhall, and Ansel Baker; sister-in-law, Paula Johnson (Danny) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Place and time of a memorial service will be announced at a later time once health restrictions are lifted.
