Joseph Kohn Hall

Joseph Kohn Hall, 89, of Bluffton, SC passed away Thursday, October 12, 2023, at his home. Joe was born February 6, 1934 in Asheville, NC to the late Calvert R. Hall and Ruth Kohn Hall. He was preceded in death by his sister, Harriet Hall Murrell. He is survived by his husband of two years, Darrel Hawkins, and nephews George Michael Murrell IV of Cold Spring Harbor, NY and Lewis Eric Murrell of New Orleans, LA.

During a career that spanned five decades, Joe worked as an architect in London, New Orleans, San Francisco, Asheville, and Hilton Head. Joe often visited Hilton Head as a young man with his parents, so decided to settle there in the early 1980’s. He was passionate about the design of Hilton Head Island as a leader in covenanted living, which demonstrates how the built environment can complement and coexist with the natural landscape. His work spanned churches and other public spaces as well as residential projects. Many of his ideas and ventures were ahead of their time, but he found friends and clients who agreed with his stylistic approach to life and living. Joe saw himself as an interpreter of others’ dreams and visions. He would listen to a client and interpret what they expressed to help them see their vision come to life. In this way, he was working as he lived. He loved to see others live into their own gifts. He was compassionate and encouraging. Most of all, he loved the idea that we all archive the story of our own lives. Joe recognized that each of us has a tremendous story to tell that rarely gets told.

A Celebration of Life will be help 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm, November 9, 2023 at Sippin Cow, 36 Promenade St., Bluffton.
