Laurel Libby Obituary

Laurel Annette Libby, passed away peacefully at home in her sleep, Thursday, April 22, 2021, with her loving husband, Dale, by her side after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.  She was born May 25, 1940 in Milo, Maine, the daughter of Dana R. and Pauline A. (Hoxie) Grindle.  She was a graduate of Milo High School and Maine Medical School of Nursing.  Laurel worked as a nurse for over 20 years across the country and back.  Unable to stay away, she also volunteered at several hospitals.  She and Dale lived in six different states and travelled the globe in their 58 years of marriage.  Laurel loved to travel to foreign lands, like China where she touched the Great Wall and take cruises to tropical islands, like Pago Pago for that long awaited honeymoon.  She also belonged to many social clubs, from the Gourmet Club and potluck groups to the Newcomers Club, where she served as president.  Entertaining friends and hosting parties were one of her many specialties.  Her real passion, however, was her family and being “Mimi” to her six grandchildren.  There was not a birthday, holiday, sporting event, or graduation that she didn’t attend or celebrate with a card.  Her thoughtfulness and selflessness will be missed.

Laurel is survived by her beloved husband, Dale; her son, Mark, and his wife Lory, of Swansea, MA; her daughter, Melissa Whitfield and her husband Larry, of Clemson, SC; her brother Paul Grindle and his wife, Ruby, of Surprise, AZ; her sister, Shirley George and her husband, Roger, of Bangor, ME; her beloved grandchildren, Christopher Libby, of Los Angeles, CA, Julia Sanzari and her husband, Philip, of Manhattan, NY, Jonathan Libby, and his wife, Machaela, of Westport, MA, and Katherine, Sydney, and Sarah Whitfield, all of Clemson, SC; and countless cousins, nieces, nephews and friends, who all lit up her life.

A private celebration of Laurel’s life will be held at a future date.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a favorite charity in her name.  Please add a memory to Mrs. Libby’s “Tribute Wall” page, on the Sauls Funeral Home (Bluffton, SC) website (www.saulsfh.com)
