Mary Reilly Obituary

Mary Theresa Reilly (nee Gilbert), 93, of Bluffton, South Carolina, died peacefully on Sunday, June 5, 2022, in Plainfield, New Jersey.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Gregory the Great, 31 Saint Gregory Drive, Bluffton, South Carolina. Internment will follow at Beaufort National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Mary to the St. Francis Breadline (https://give.stfrancisbreadline.org/page/1123/donate/1?locale=en-US).  

Mary was born in Lisselton, County Kerry, Ireland, and immigrated to New York in 1947. She earned her bachelor’s degree in pharmacology at Fordham University and her master’s in education at Columbia University. She went on to work at a chemist for the New York Police Department and as a chemistry teacher. She spent most of the last 22 years living in Bluffton, where she enjoyed the company of many close friends. She played bridge and participated in Irish cultural activities. She was a devoted member of the congregation at St. Gregory.

Mary was predeceased by her husband of 40 years John T. Reilly, as well as sisters Norrie Donegan and Brigid Gilbert and brother Maurice Gilbert. Mary is survived by her son David, grandsons Conor and Peter, and daughter-in-law Dawn. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews living in Canada and Ireland.
