Maureen Kecmer of Bluffton, South Carolina passed away at the age 70 on Sunday March 8, 2020. She was born in Jersey City, New Jersey to Helen and Raymond Clyons. She graduated from Culver Stockton College and began her 49 year public school teaching career in Hoboken, New Jersey, where in 1994 she was awarded “Teacher of the Year” for Brandt Middle School and was a NJ Governor’s teacher recognition honoree for Hudson County. The ever-present positive energy she exhibited each day earned her the nickname of “The Sunshine Lady”. After 35 years of teaching in Hoboken she moved to Bluffton, South Carolina and taught at Hilton Head Island Elementary School for another 14 years. Her successes in Hoboken and at HHI Elementary were the result of many dedicated thoughtful hours that went into every lesson plan and into the planning and organization of many parent night events; such as, The Cat in the Hat Reading Room event on Dr Seuss’s birthday with special guest readers like NY Giants linebacker Dhani Jones and US House of Representatives member Bob Menendez in 2004, and various creative Math Night events. Maureen had a passion for teaching her students in unique and inventive ways that instructed and challenged them, bringing out their very best results. As the Numeracy Coach at HHI Elementary School from 2011-2012 thru 2018- 2019, she channeled her teaching passion towards mentoring teachers.
She will be dearly missed as a wife, mother, grandmother and very caring friend. Maureen is survived by her husband of 47 years Stanley, daughter Suzanne, granddaughter Isabella and son-in-law Michael Bollerman.
Her funeral mass will be held at Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Bluffton South Carolina on a date to be announced. There will be a remembrance luncheon served immediately after the funeral mass. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the cancer research organization of your choice.
