Michael "Mike" B. Egan

Michael “Mike” Bernard Egan passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones on May 19, 2022. Born on March 21, 1943, he was the only child of the late Bernard and Viola Egan of Joliet, IL, where he was raised.  He is survived by his loving wife Susan Egan of Bluffton, SC; children Chrys Egan of Salisbury, MD (John Murphy) and Kent Egan (Lisa Egan) of Atlanta, GA; four grandsons Jack, Liam, Patrick, and Mason Egan; and brother-in-law James Mason of Bluffton, SC.

Mike was a warm, caring son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend.  He loved telling stories, especially family legends that grew larger and larger with each retelling.  His family still laughs at his many catch phrases from him and his stories. 

Throughout his life, he was a member of several Catholic churches, attended Catholic schools, served as an altar boy, and was a CCD Sunday School teacher.  He was a lifelong follower of his high school football team, the Joliet Catholic Hilltoppers, since his days of playing there. He attended Northern Illinois University, where he studied history, was in the Theta Chi fraternity, and met his wife Sue on a blind date. 

He was an avid enthusiast of Winston Churchill and military history, collecting historical documents and artifacts. He was professionally successful in his advertising career, working for companies including 3M, RJR Nabisco, and the Chicago O’Hare Airport.  He was excited to retire from “the windy city” to Bluffton, where he enjoyed being out in nature and time with good neighbors.

He loved to laugh, enjoy the company of fun people, spend times with his dogs, and boast about his grandsons. 

A Celebration of Life will be held June 25, 10:30 am at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in Bluffton. In lieu of flowers, consider donating to Maranatha Farm Animal Rescue or Salisbury University Department of History.
