Paul Westphal, Jr. Obituary

Paul E. Westphal Jr passed away peacefully on Friday, September 2, 2022.

Mr. Westphal was born in Hampton, Virginia April 18, 1936 and graduated from Fork Union Military Academy in 1954.  He received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy and graduated with the Class of 1958.  He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, United States Marine Corps upon graduation from the Naval Academy.

Subsequent staff and command assignments took him to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Marine Barracks, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and the 3rd Marine Division in Vietnam, where he served as a company commander.  He returned to Marine Corps Base, Quantico, Virginia and participated in the development of the equipment maintenance management system.  He returned for a second tour in Vietnam, serving as the division engineer and executive officer of the 11th Engineer Battalion. He then attended the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.  He became the Marine Officer Instructor at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, Illinois.  He returned to Headquarters, Marine Corps in 1974, where he served as Head, Facilities Maintenance Section.  His final assignment was as the Deputy Director of the Defense Mapping School, Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, retiring in 1978 as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Mr. Westphal worked in the defense industry for 30 years, providing management services and performing staff duties in Navy Headquarters.  He was the Requirements Officer for aircraft safety systems in the Air Warfare Division of OpNav. He worked for the Surveys and Investigative Staff of the House Appropriations Committee, U.S. House of Representatives.  He also worked as an operations manager in commercial renovation and construction.

His personal military decorations include two awards of the Bronze Star Medal with combat V for meritorious service in combat, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon.  He was trustee emeritus of the Board of Trustees, Fork Union Military Academy.  He was also a member of the Army Navy Country Club, the United States Naval Academy Alumni and Athletic Associations and the Fork Union Military Academy Alumni Association, where he served as a past president. 

He is survived by his sons: David W. Westphal of Houston, TX, James A. Westphal of Beaufort, SC, Edward L. Westphal of Houston, TX and Eric P. Westphal of Midlothian, VA as well as eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Road, Bluffton, SC on Saturday, October 22, 2022. Visitation will be from 3:00-4:00, and the service will be from 4:00-5:00.  Inurnment will be at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, VA at a later date.
