Peter Fuge Obituary

Peter Fuge, retired Family Court Judge, 74, passed away after a long battle with cancer on June 5, 2022 surrounded by his family.  He was a loving husband, father and friend to many.  Peter, affectionately known to his friends and family as Pete, was born October 4, 1947 in Springfield, MA, to the late William Charles Fuge and Margaret (Leach) Fuge.

Pete grew up in Kensington, MD, and attended St. John’s College High School. He graduate from the University of South Carolina in 1970 and the University of South Carolina School of Law, earning his Juris Doctorate in 1974.  Pete began his career at Dowling, Dowling, Sanders & Dukes, P.A. and later practiced with Fuge & Denton, P.A., and Harvey & Battey, P.A.  In 1995, he went into private practice at Peter L Fuge, P.A. The majority of his law career was focused on family law.  Peter was honored to serve the South Carolina Bar in various capacities as Chairman of the Family Law Section Counsel, Member of the House of Delegates, and Lawyers Helping Lawyers. He served as Chairman of the Supreme Court Family Law Specialization Board and the Chairman of the Supreme Court Commission on CLE & Specialization. He served as Chairman of the Family Law Section of the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association.

He served on the steering committee for the annual Attorneys and Judges Substance Abuse and Ethics Seminar.  Peter enjoyed mentoring new lawyers who often came to him for advice.  In 2008, Peter was elected by the Legislature of the State of South Carolina to the position of Family Court Judge for the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit.  He remained in this position until his retirement in December of 2019.  Holding this position helped Peter fulfil his desire to be of service to others and use the knowledge and experience he gained as a result of his many years in private practice.  During his years as a Family Court Judge, he was proud to have helped create, in conjunction with the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit Solicitor, the Beaufort County Juvenile Drug Court. Pete was a loyal and true friend, lived life to the fullest and gave himself unselfishly of his time and with no expectation of praise. He was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling with his wife and children, playing golf and spending time with his grandchildren.

Above all, Pete was most proud of his family and service to others. Pete is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Meredith Fuge; his three children Brantley King, William Charles Fuge II (Marcela), and Meghan Ofner; his eight grandchildren; his brother, Jeffrey Charles Fuge and many nieces, nephews and cousins.  Peter was preceded in death by his father, William, his mother, Margaret, and his brother William McKinley Fuge.
