Raymond Edward Schurgot

Raymond Edward Schurgot, age 94, of Bluffton/Hilton Head Island, SC and formerly of Philadelphia/Easton, PA died Thursday, September 14, 2023 at Canterfield of Bluffton.

Mr. Schurgot was born on February 8, 1929 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of the late Sophia and Maximillion Schurgot. He spent 43 years in the insurance industry first with General Accident and then his last 22 years with Equitable Insurance Company, retiring as an Assistant Manager in the Data Processing Center.  He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving honorably during the Korean War.  He was a member and Past President of the Claims Association.  He was a Fourth Degree Knight with the St. Katharine Drexel Knights of Columbus of Philadelphia and was a parishioner of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. He was on the Board of Directors for Treetops-Ocean Breeze and served as Treasurer of the POA, Past President of the Eagles Point POA, and Board Member of the Hilton Head Jazz Society.  He also worked as a Starter with the Eagles Pointe and Crescent Pointe Golf Clubs.

Mr. Schurgot is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Norma Jean Schurgot; son, Neil Schurgot (Melanie); daughter, Pamela. Schurgot; grandchildren, Kristen Recupero (Joseph, Jr.), Kevin Schurgot, Breanna Weiss (Ryan), Jennifer Torres-Mayo (Zachary), and Marisa Torres; great-grandchildren, Carolina Mayo, Penelope Mayo, Calvin Mayo, Joseph Recupero, III, Elliana Recupero, Sophia Recupero, and Skye Weiss; nieces, Donna Yanura and Diane Cook (James); and nephew, Kenneth Yanura.

The family will be receiving friends from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., Monday, September 25, 2023 at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Road, Bluffton, SC 29910.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 31 Saint Gregory Drive, Bluffton, SC 29909. The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the mass at the church.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 884 Allbritton Blvd, Suite 115, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
