Reverend Deacon Albert Schito Obituary

Reverend Deacon Albert John Schito, 78, of Bluffton, South Carolina, succumbed to cancer in the comfort of his own home surrounded by his family on May 24, 2021.

Deacon Al is survived by his wife Cathi of 55 years, daughter Michele Ann Sackermann, her husband Charles, daughter Marianne Paige (pre deceased husband James), son Salvatore Paul Schito, his wife Karen, grandchildren (10) Annalee Marine Paige, Lindsay Catherine Sackermann, Albert James Schito, Charles James Sackermann, Salvatore Paul Schito, Jr., Taylor Joan Sackermann, James Paul Sackermann, Mark John Sackermann, Gabe Michael Schito, and John Anthony Pezzuti, III. He is also survived by his beloved sisters Maryann and Sallee Schito, and much loved extended family. Deacon Al was a loving father, husband, grandfather, and friend to everyone.

Deacon Al was born on September 18, 1942, into a large, loving Italian family filled with love, friendship, fun, and food. He played and loved sports, especially baseball, where his favorite team was the New York Yankees. He coached softball, baseball, and football for his children and never missed a game, recital, or important event in their lives. At 50 years of age he discovered his true calling and became a Deacon in the Catholic Church. After this, he described himself “as the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” - Lou Gehrig. He spent his time comforting the sick, mentoring prisoners, teaching children, and helping anyone in need. He loved his parish and parishioners at Saint Anthony Mission Catholic Church in Hardeeville, SC. We are sure he is now in the arms of God and of his parents, Sal and Lee. He was our hero and although we will desperately miss him, we will live our lives in his honor and image and make him proud.

A special thank you to the people at Amedisys Hospice in Beaufort for their loving care and support during his final days. Also, the family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Sauls Funeral Home for being very accommodating and understanding during this difficult time.

Funeral services for Deacon Al will be held at Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Bluffton on Thursday, June 3rd at 10:30am. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 am until the hour of the service at the church. The live stream for the service will be found at http://www.sgg.cc/mass-live-stream.html.
