Richard Allard Obituary

A devoted husband, father, step-father and grandfather, Richard Crockett Allard, Dick, 88, passed away at his Bluffton, South Carolina home within the loving arms of his wife on June 30, 2019. Dick was born on May 11, 1931, to Katherine Crockett and John William Allard in Tacoma, Washington. Dick lived the majority of his life near the Seattle area and attended Washington State University where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, graduating with a degree in English. He enlisted in the United States Airforce as a First Lieutenant and was involved within an active war zone throughout his tour of duty. After an Honorable Discharge, Dick began his career in marketing and relocated to Connecticut. Eventually, he found his way back to his beloved northwest and moved into a career with the Weyerhauser Company in Tacoma, the company from which he retired. After retiring, Dick developed and invested in other business interests, concluding a position as Director with the Special Olympics with an emphasis on athletics. He loved the kids in the program and they returned his love and enriched his life so many ways. In South Carolina, he created a property management company that prospered for several years.

Dick was a gentleman in the true meaning of the word, always thoughtful of others. His deep sense of honesty, integrity and loyalty formed the core of his code of ethics both personally and professionally, and to him a handshake was as good as a contract. He will be missed by many.

Dick’s love of the water began as a young man where spent summers sailing on the beautiful waters of Puget Sound near Seattle, Washington. His love continued to grow throughout his life, where he was an avid, competitive sailor. He competed in several Swiftsure Classics with his long-long-time sailing friends. One of his greatest sailing trips was from Seattle to Hawaii and back over a 19-day period. Dick never forgot about his water adventures with his sons and the friends he grew to love and admire.

He is preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Samuel Brock Allard. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Susan, sons Tom and Geoff, stepsons, David and Mark Spence, daughter-in-law’s, Mara Allard and Amanda Spence, and grandchildren, Nicholas, Katherine, Jack and Sarah Allard (Geoff and Mara) and Sara Jane, Annie, Christian (Mark and Amanda), Kelson and Campbell Spence (David).
