Richard Haas Obituary

Richard (Dick) Haas passed away on January 1, 2022.  Born and raised in Jackson Heights, Queens, NY, the only child of Edwin and Winifred Haas, Dick graduated from LaSalle Academy (NYC) and Manhattan College (Riverdale, NY).  A proud veteran, Dick served as a member of VS 835, Navy Air, assigned to the Naval Air Station at Floyd Bennett Field in New York from 1962–1969.  While pursuing graduate studies at St. John’s University, Dick began his career in what was then known as the Bell System and spent 32 years in management with AT&T, NY Telephone and NYNEX, and assumed responsibilities in Business Office, Sales and Marketing capacities.

Dick was loved by his family and many friends. He was married to Kathleen (Kathy) Haas for 58 years, and they raised their family in Huntington, NY for 37 years.  Dick is survived by his wife, daughters Kristine Gould (Timothy B. Gould) and Kathryn Haas, as well as grandchildren Timothy, Matthew and Katherine Gould and Michael (Haas) Monte.  Dick took great pleasure in sports and was a lifelong baseball fan, traveling to over 15 Major League Baseball All-Star Games and numerous World Series. Dick played softball for 17 years and found his true passion as a “working at it” golfer. He desired to see the world, traveling around the globe with his beloved Kathy, visiting almost every continent.  Together, they loved to take to the dance floor on any occasion and enjoyed entertaining with friends and family.

Dick and Kathy moved to Sun City HH twenty-one years ago. They were fortunate enough to bring old friends with them, and make wonderful new friends, all of whom have surrounded them with love and care through two-decades of laughter and tears.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Gregory’s Church in Bluffton at 10:30 am, Friday, January 7, 2022. The family will receive visitors in the church vestibule at 9:30 am before Mass.  Dick’s ashes will be interred at Beaufort National Cemetery at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Dick’s name be made to DragonBoat Beaufort, PO Box 213, Beaufort SC 29901.
