Robert Edward Davies

Robert Davies, nine-year resident of Sun City and 20-year resident of Daufuskie Island passed away at home after a short illness on July 3, 2021.  Robert, who was known as Bob to his friends and Bobby to his grandchildren, was with his family when he passed away. 

Bob was the middle of three sons, born in Swissvale, PA in 1933; he was a stellar athlete and earned a football scholarship to Louisville University.  On a return bus trip through Pittsburgh from a game in Detroit he decided to not go back to Louisville and worked in the steel mills for a year before walking on at Waynesburg College, a small school in Washington PA.  He played football at Waynesburg for three years and was the first in his family to attend and graduate from college.

Bob met Mary Jane Bock in 1956 “in a nice bar” and they married in 1958; having their first child Michele in 1959, their son Mark in 1962 and daughters Sandy and Tricia in 1963 and 1969.  Mary Jane died in 2010 after 53 years of marriage and Bob moved from Daufuskie to Sun City in 2012.

Bob was a group claims manager with Equitable Life Assurance for 30 years and was a home builder on Daufuskie, where he built 33 houses in about 20 years.  “Bob the Builder” was well known on Daufuskie; and was always willing to help anyone in need.  His heart remains on Daufuskie where his family enjoyed many visits for 20 years.

Bob has eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  His sixth great-grandchild is due next week and will take the middle name of Robert, the second great-grandchild to do so in his honor.

Bob was known to diligently attend happy hours at Jameson’s and the Okatie Ale House, and his friends there became his extended family.  They always looked out for “The Mayor of Jameson’s” and assured his needs were taken care of.  The Davies family will be forever indebted to their friendship towards our father.

Bob leaves behind a large family that will miss him dearly.  Bob’s daughter Michele and husband Jim Goodwin, son Chris (his wife Susan), daughter Stephanie; Bob’s son Mark and wife Janet, son Ryan and daughter Lauren (husband Cameron); Bob’s daughter Sandy and husband Brad Rolf, daughters Jenna (husband Chase) and Amy; daughter Tricia and husband Todd Elliott and sons Colin and Evan.  Eight grandchildren and soon to be six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends beginning at Noon on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Rd., Bluffton until the hour of the service at 1:00 pm.
