Sharon Surber Obituary

Sharon Lynne Surber, 71, of Bluffton S.C. died on December 26, 2021 after a short illness. She was born in Plainfield, NJ on July 8, 1950 to Robert H. Ober and Marguerite G. Ober. She attended Rahway High School and Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey) before marrying her husband Charles Surber on February 16, 1974.

Always active in her community, Sharon spent 22 years in service with the Union County Arts Center in Rahway, NJ. She prided herself on being one of the founders who fought to raise funds to purchase the old, deteriorated movie house on Irving Street. She did everything from stuffing envelopes, making phone calls, and even acting as an usher on opening night after the theater underwent a 4 year renovation. She eventually moved up to theater manager. Sharon's favorite role was always that of a wife and mother. Always the first person to volunteer for the PTA, as class mother, softball coach, chaperone for class field trips; there wasn't anything she wasn't willing to do for her children. She later extended that same love to her two grandchildren.

Sharon was a longtime resident of Rahway, NJ until relocating to the lowcountry in 2004 to fulfill her lifelong dream of living near the beach. Once in South Carolina Sharon began her second career in banking, retiring in 2015. After retirement, Sharon discovered a new passion – traveling. Though she never quite achieved her goal of visiting all 50 states, she came awfully close. She was also very involved in her church and sorority. Anyone who knew Sharon knew that her love for football and the NY Giants ran deep.

What most will remember about Sharon though is her kind heart, generosity, and positive outlook on life. To quote Will Rogers, she "never met a man she didn't like." Sharon was a friend to everyone and made an impression everywhere she went. She was never happier than when she was surrounded by family and loved ones.

She is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Charles Surber, her children Tracy Jerue (Jason), Kate Smith (Cory), Christopher Surber, and her two granddaughters, Abigail and Sybil.
