Thomas R. Coffey, age 79, passed away August 22, 2020 in Bluffton, SC. Tom was born to Mildred Eskilson and Charles Coffey on October 14, 1940. Tom was raised in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago, IL and graduated from Chase Middle School, Tuley High School, and Wright Jr. College in Chicago.
Tom worked for the Chicago Tribune for 35 years. He started in the Credit Union department and worked his way up to his final position of Finance Manager. He then worked for the Chicago Sun Times in the same position for another 5 years before retiring at the age of 58.
Tom was a lifelong Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan. He did get to see the Cubs win a World Series, so he didn’t die hard! His hobbies included golf and a good game of cards, preferably poker. He loved horseracing and annual trips with his wife, Patricia, to the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas to “visit his money”, as he would say.
Tom and Pat moved to Sun City Bluffton, SC in 1997. He was a member of the finance team to fund the Hidden Cypress golf course in Sun City and played in the inaugural open. The support Patricia has received from their Sun City Family and Friends of St Andrews Lane has been overwhelming to say the least.
Tom is survived by his wife, Patricia Coffey, of Sun City Bluffton, SC. His son Paul, his wife Laura, and their daughters Megan and Tatum Coffey of Conifer CO. His son Mark and his wife Larissa of Warrenville, IL. His older brother James and his wife Sheila Coffey of Arlington Heights IL. As well as several nieces and nephews.
We respectfully appreciate all who have read this and would like to share Tom’s favorite Irish quote:
“May your glass be ever full. May the roof over your head be always strong. And may you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows your dead.”
