Ursula Behr Obituary

Ursula Anita Finkelstein Behr (1926 - 2024)

Ursula Anita Finkelstein Behr of Bluffton, SC died peacefully at home on January 21, 2024 at the age of 97.

Ursula was preceded in death by her husband Artur Behr and her brother Harvey Fink. She is survived by her daughters Miriam Royal and her husband Robert Royal, Esther Lindenberger and her husband Michael Lindenberger, and her son Daniel Behr and his wife Donna Behr. Grandchildren Ellen, Dora, Aaron and Alexander and great grandchildren Tim, Liza, Jacob, Kyleigh, and Delaney.

Ursula was born in Berlin, Germany in 1926 to Stephan and Dorothea Finkelstein.  She was one of the few remaining holocaust survivors – a “lucky” one at that, having escaped Nazi Germany with her mother in 1938 at the age of 12 – bound from Berlin to Colombia, South America where her father had immigrated one year earlier.  In 1945 she met her beloved husband Artur who had separately left Germany for Colombia in 1936.  They married in 1946, settled in the capital city Bogota, and 2 years later had twin daughters Esther and Miriam. Their son Daniel was born 10 years later.

Ursula was known to many as Mami, Oma, Uschi or Mrs. Behr.  She was a devoted teacher and taught Kindergarten and 3rd grade at Colegio Nueva Granada in Bogota for over 20 years.  She was highly respected by her colleagues and enjoyed many hobbies such as reading, knitting, crocheting, needle point, cross stitch, baking, jam making, playing bridge with close friends, and many others.

Although not one to share her emotions openly, she loved her family and friends deeply and her memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.

There will be no service for Ursula, but we invite those who want to share special stories or memories of her to email them to
