On September 11th, 2023, William E. Murphy passed away peacefully in his sleep on what would have been his 90th birthday.
Bill was born September 11, 1933, in Elmira, NY to William and Valeria Murphy. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1951 and served in the Army of Occupation in Germany after WWII, Vietnam War and assignments in Arizona, Virginia, Missouri, Texas, Turkey, and Taiwan. A highly decorated combat veteran, he retired from the Air Force.
He worked for Honeywell, Sperry, and RMH Associates, before launching his first company, Hi-Tech Options. In 1986, he founded Titan Power, Inc. a business which grew from its headquarters in Phoenix to a multi-state operation with offices and clients in 11 states in the mountain west. In 1999, he sold the business to his protégé, and Titan Power remains a strong corporate entity, thriving under the foundation Bill provided.
In retirement, Bill moved to Sun City Hilton Head and took up residence on the 8th Green of the golf course. For the next 23 years he was a fixture in Sun City, which he called “God’s waiting room.” He was always a providing a helping hand to neighbors, playing poker, and eating breakfast with his “gang” of buddies. He loved golf, playing multiple times a week for decades. He shot an 84 the day before he passed away.
Bill was sober for 35 years yet still the life of any party. He was always the person with a story or joke, an outrageously funny comment or a tension lowering quip. He had a unique ability to make all feel welcome, included, and happy.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Judy, his children Karen, Elizabeth and Michael and son in law Gary. Nothing gave him more joy than his grandkids Seth and Emily and his great-grandchildren, Gabby, Hannah, Isaac, and Koa. He was a favorite uncle to loads of Anderson cousins and a beloved Godfather.
A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 am, Monday, September 25, 2023 at Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 31 St. Gregory Dr., Bluffton.
