William “Bill” G. Roe a lifelong resident of Bluffton, SC died on 2/17/2020 at MUSC in Charleston. After graduating from the University of Georgia, a member of the Gridiron Society and serving in the United States Marine Corps, he began work as a security trader in Atlanta, Ga. where he was a member of the Atlanta Polo team. Bill brought his love of the sport to the Lowcountry where he built a polo field, exercise track and stables at Windy Knoll Farm in Bluffton on the May River with his wife Nancy and their four children. They established polo at Rose Hill Plantation and travelled to Charleston, Aiken, Atlanta and Camden to play. Bill was a well-known political writer and essayist frequently contributing to CNN/FN and was involved in a wide variety of civic and community organizations. A champion for education, he had served as president of the Beaufort County Education Alliance and a past member of the College of Charleston Board of Visitors. In 1999, the Governor of South Carolina bestowed the highest honor a citizen can receive for service to his state, awarding him with The Order Of The Palmetto and the rare distinction of being named a Palmetto Gentleman.
