William W. Standen

William W. Standen passed away on November 10, 2022 at the age of 86. He is survived by his loving wife, Sheila, of 64 years; two sons, Scott and Craig (Helen), five grandchildren, one step grandson, two great-grandchildren and one step great-grandchild. He is also survived by a niece, Pam (Peter) Uihlein and two grandnephews. He was predeceased by his parents Ralph and Ruth Standen, his sister, Pat Geitgey, and his nephew, Dr. William Geitgey. Bill was born in Elyria, Ohio in 1936. Following graduation from Cornell University, where he was a member and president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, Midshipman Brigade Commander and recipient of the Officer’s Sword as the unit’s outstanding Midshipmen, he served three years as an officer in the US Navy and returned to Ohio where he was engaged in the family insurance business.

His devotion to community service was recognized when he was named one of Ohio’s Five Outstanding Young Men in 1967. During his years in Elyria he held leadership positions in numerous civic and charitable organizations including Rotary where he was a member for 35 years and President in 1972.  He and his wife, Sheila, moved to Hilton Head Island, SC in 1996 where he was active in several church and charitable organizations including RBC Heritage Golf Tournament where he was Vice Chairman of the “back nine” marshals. He was especially dedicated to serving the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra and its League.

A memorial service will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church on Hilton Head Island on Friday, December 2, 2022 at 3:00 pm followed by a reception at the church.  Private interment will be at Beaufort National Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church, St. Jude’s Research Hospital, Tunnels to Towers Foundation, and the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra.
